Tucson Considers Bamboo as an EccoFriendly Choice PDF  | Print |
Thursday, 17 January 2008

Here in the Untied States, we are just discovering the amazing versatility of bamboo so it may be surprising to some to find that bamboo is the most widely used plants on earth.  It is widely used in the tropics in the construction of homes and bridges. In Asia, it is common to see scaffolding made entirely from bamboo. It has also proven to be essential in earthquake architecture. In Limon, Costa Rica, only bamboo houses from the National Bamboo Project stood after the violent earthquake in 1992. It is also use to make paper, and often common goods. Okay, maybe that we knew; but there is more, much more to bamboo.

Tuesday, 30 October 2007

In climates with year round mild weather, pools are a regular feature of backyard landscape. With so many affordable choices in design features, it is good to know your options before you take the plunge.

Know Your Usage
Pools can be a way of life for a lot of people, and be a completely different way of life from one another. Since a pool can be an investment not only of money, but of your lifestyle, it makes sense to know how you realistically plan to use your pool. For those who like the idea of a pool for regular exercise, and are not likely to have many gatherings, a lap pool can be a great choice. If you like huge family gatherings, you may want to include slides or other play features. No matter what you plan, there are great options and features that can accommodate your life and usage of space.

Prepairing to Paint PDF  | Print |
Sunday, 28 October 2007

One of the best ways to perk up a home’s interior is giving it a fresh look with new paint. Whether you are doing the job yourself, or calling in a certified painting professional, these simple tips will help you get the job done right.

Preparing the Room
Though it may seem like extra effort, it is well worth while to remove the furnishings in the room you are planning to work in. This extra effort pays off in keeping your furniture paint free and also clears the area so that you can see flaws more easily. Next, loosen light fixtures and wrap them with plastic bags. Plastic grocery bags with handles work well because you can use the handles to tie the bag securely. Remove all window coverings and their hardware. Keep some zippered baggies handy to store the hardware in and tape to the curtain rods. You will thank yourself later.

Clogged Drains PDF  | Print |
Sunday, 28 October 2007

It is likely that you have or someday soon will have to deal with the mess of a clogged drain. The system of pipes, traps and cleanouts are largely “out of sight, out of mind.” That is, until some unpleasant problem makes itself known. When plumbing problems arise, the often panic stricken homeowner has two choices: Do it yourself, or hire a professional. All drains can become clogged with hair, grease, food or other residue.  Certainly, there are times when it is necessary to call a plumbing professional but for a clogged drain; there are a few simple tricks to try before making the call.

The Simple Plunger

Very often the faithful plunger is enough to do the job. Several plunges are usually enough to dislodge the debris and allow it to float away.

Avoiding Sub-Standard Contractors PDF  | Print |
Friday, 19 October 2007

Unfortunately, there are contractors out there who put out sub-par work. We have all heard the horror stories. Someone pays half up front and the contractor is never heard from again after the first day. Another person pays a fortune for a bathroom that leaks up a storm. The stories are endless, but most of them could have been avoided in the first place.

The Low Ball Bid
When choosing a contractor, many people rely solely on the price. Though many great contractors can come in with a low bid, it is important to take in all considerations. Untrustworthy contractors, or worse, scammers, take advantage of the low ball bid frequently. The homeowner may not be aware of how one contractor can work for such a cut rate. If they are reputable and do a high volume, it is likely that they can pass some savings on to you. It can be a red flag however, of an untrustworthy contractor. The “savings” may reflect stolen goods, or a desire to get what they can and leave an unfinished job.

Tankless Water Heaters PDF  | Print |
Monday, 15 October 2007

tankless water heaterWhen finding a need to replace a hot water heater or replacing one as part of a larger home improvement project, many homeowners are replacing their traditional water heaters with tankless water heaters. Tankless or on-demand water heaters are finding favor for the convenience they offer, as well as long term savings. While they may be the relatively new kid on the block in the Unite States, they are the common water heating source in Japan and Europe, where space in the home is at a premium and energy prices are notoriously high. With Americans becoming increasingly energy conscious many are consulting home improvement professionals for ways to save money.
